Higher-hazard devices add a relief valve between two checks that dumps water to the ground if both fail, so the contaminated side never reaches the potable side even in a double failure.

That’s why the springs and seats are what get tested annually. They’re the only moving parts standing between your drinking water and whatever the cross connection is attached to, and they wear.

Both. Backflow happens through a cross connection when pressure reverses, and there are two ways that pressure reverses.

Back siphonage is negative pressure in the water main. A main break, a heavy fire-hydrant draw, or any event that drops supply pressure creates suction — the same effect as drinking through a straw — and that suction pulls water backward through the connection. Non-potable water from an irrigation line or a boiler gets siphoned into the potable supply.

Back pressure is the opposite direction. Downstream pressure climbs higher than the supply side, usually from pumps, boilers, or a pressurized system, and pushes water backward against normal flow. When downstream pressure exceeds what the water main delivers, water reverses through the cross connection.

Either way, the fix is the same: a backflow preventer sized to the hazard, installed at the cross connection.

Five, and the right one depends on the hazard level and whether you need protection from back siphonage, back pressure, or both.

  • Air gap: a physical vertical separation between the supply outlet and the rim of the receiving vessel, at least twice the supply pipe diameter and never under one inch. No moving parts, so nothing fails. It’s the most effective method there is, but it breaks the pressurized line, which rules it out for most connections.
  • Reduced pressure zone assembly (RPZ): two independent spring-loaded check valves with a pressure differential relief valve between them, plus shutoffs and test cocks. Protects against both back pressure and back siphonage, and it’s mandatory for high-hazard applications: medical facilities, boilers, chemical connections.
  • Pressure vacuum breaker (PVB): a spring-loaded check valve and an air inlet valve with shutoffs and test cocks. Handles back siphonage only, so it goes where downstream pressure won’t exceed supply. Common on residential irrigation.
  • Double check valve assembly (DCV): two spring-loaded check valves in series. Used on low-hazard, non-health cross connections that need physical separation between a non-potable system and the potable line.
  • Atmospheric vacuum breaker: the simplest and least expensive option, limited to low-hazard use. Installation restrictions apply: no shutoff valve downstream, and it can’t sit under continuous pressure.

  • Fire suppression systems: additives and standing water in the lines can reverse into the supply without one.
